    • 1 1/2 cups grated Kefalotiri, Parmesan, or Pecorino cheese, divided
    • 🥚 1 large egg, lightly beaten
    • 🥚 1 large egg yolk, lightly beaten

STEPS

1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.

2

Prepare meat sauce by sautéing onion and garlic in butter, adding ground beef, and mixing with tomatoes, wine, broth, tomato paste, parsley, and seasonings. Simmer for 20 minutes.

3

Cook pasta in salted boiling water until al dente, drain, and toss with butter, cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Add beaten eggs and set aside.

4

Make béchamel by cooking butter and flour, then whisking in milk and seasonings until thickened. Stir in cheese, egg, and egg yolk, and mix part of it with the meat sauce.

5

Assemble pastitsio in layers: pasta at the bottom, meat sauce in the middle, and béchamel sauce on top. Finish with grated cheese.

6

Bake in preheated oven for 50 minutes, until bubbling and golden brown.

7

Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
