INGREDIENTS

  • Base Ingredients

    • 1 cup pitted Deglet Noor dates
    • 💧 1 cup hot water
    • 🧈 ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 🥚 2 large eggs
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Dry Ingredients

    • 🌾 ⅓ cup whole wheat flour
    • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • ½ teaspoon baking soda
    • 🧂 ¼ teaspoon salt
    • 🍫 ½ cup bittersweet chocolate chips (Optional)

STEPS

1

Soak dates in hot water in a small bowl for 10 to 15 minutes.

2

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8x8-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving overhang for easy lifting.

3

Drain dates and transfer to a food processor. Pulse until completely smooth, 1 to 2 minutes. Add hot water by tablespoon if needed.

4

Add softened butter to the food processor; pulse to combine for about 30 seconds. Add eggs and vanilla extract, processing until light and fluffy for about 1 minute.

5

Add wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt to the mixture. Pulse until just combined for about 30 seconds. Stir in chocolate chips manually.

6

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top.

7

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, until edges just begin to set.

8

Cool in the dish for 10 minutes, gently lift out using parchment overhang, and cool completely on a rack.

9

Cut into 16 squares and serve.
